Employer Spotlight: Magna Machine & Tool

Magna Machine & Tool is an Indiana machine shop specializing in designing and manufacturing gages, fixtures, tooling, and other machinery. In over two decades, their design department has expanded from one full-time designer to three, with one designer starting their career on the shop floor. Magna’s design and fabrication capabilities have led to extensive experience designing special machines, integrating and retrofitting machines, and designing fixtures and gauges.

The company was founded in 1975 by Dick Culy and Marion Shore, who were both owners and the first employees. Between 1995 and 2000, Dick and Marion retired and sold the business to employees Eugene Weaver and Mike Broyles. In 2012, Eugene and Mike also retired, and the business was sold to employees Bruce Schmidt, Doug Hinshaw, and Kirk Robbins.

The design department’s core strength is custom machines. President Kirk Robbins notes, “Our experience ranges from the simplest machine to the more complex turn-key projects. We also have experience in individual-build machines, including the many issues associated with this type of machine, such as ergonomics, compact size, and efficient use of space and weight.”  As Magna expands, its expertise in designing and building these machines grows.

“We are always looking for people with good problem-solving skills and math backgrounds. We are open to candidates with both limited and extensive machining experience. Because our business is so specialized, there is always in-house training, which we must do with new employees,” said Robbins.

Magna Machine & Tool provides its employees with a benefits package that includes seven paid holidays annually (including three days between Christmas and New Year’s), paid health insurance (with the employee contributing 25% of the premium), a 401(k) match each year, and vacation time that starts at the first week and increases to four weeks based on years of service.
